Harri Evans-Mason has joined us as our new Youth in Governance Project Coordinator. Harri is 15 and has been volunteering with the Children’s Rights Unit as a Children’s Rights Champion for the past year.

Here’s what Harri has to say:

Did you know only 0.5% of 850,000 trustees in the UK are under 25 and only 30 are under 18?

Considering how important the views of young people are for so many organisations we believe we should do something about changing this figure. The ‘Youth in Governance’ project aims to train young people and support them to sit on charity boards and committees. We are looking for a group of young people aged 14 to 21 to be involved in this exciting project.

The Children’s Rights Unit is a Big Lottery Funded Project with the aim of making children’s rights a reality for children and young people living in Neath Port Talbot and surrounding areas. We believe young people are the future and by teaching about children’s rights we can empower future generations to be active citizens. We feel the low level of young people on Board need to be increased to allow young people a meaningful voice. By offering support and advice to organisations and training young people with the skills to be Board Members we believe there will be better decisions taking place as they would take into account the diversity of all those affected.

Over the next four months we want to recruit, train and support the young people to sit on boards. We are looking to recruit 8 young people to take part in this course, which will improve many skills such as communication and knowledge of not only a charity board but also children’s rights. The young people will also achieve an AQA qualification in Preparing to be a Board Member as well as Volunteering hours.

We are looking to recruit young people as soon as possible as the training will start during the October half term. To register your interest in the project either as a Young Person or as an organisation please contact Harri Evans-Mason or Hannah Bussicott on 01639 323030 or via email [email protected]
