Children's Rights Champions

Our Children’s Rights Champions are representatives from secondary schools and alternative curriculum projects in Neath Port Talbot. The group have been meeting since June to learn about Children’s Rights and to train for an ASDAN Qualification in Active Citizenship.

Last week the group met with young people from the South African project ‘Surfers not Street Children’. They also met with PC Richard Norris to discuss crime in the area, in particular the effects of drug use.

The role of the Children’s Champions following their training will be to educate their peers in children’s rights and provide support to those who feel their rights have been compromised. They will form links with Schools Councils locally and the creation of Children’s Rights Champions will ensure that children and young people become better educated about their rights and are supported in asserting them.

We’ll have more news from the group in the coming weeks as they prepare to visit the Senedd Building in Cardiff Bay to learn about the Welsh Government, as well as a residential weekend away.
