In February 2015, Neath Port Talbot Children’s Rights Unit (CRU) appointed their first ‘Young Trustee’: Harri Evans-Mason. To support Harri in his role, the CRU developed ‘Preparing to be a board member’ training and the Young Trustees Cymru project was born with the support of funding from WCVA. To date over 80 young people have achieved the accredited qualification and are having their voices heard on boards and committees throughout South Wales.

Funding for the project ended earlier this year, but we realised that there is still a need and a demand for young people to be trained in good governance, decision making and board/committee member duties.

The CRU are committed to ensuring that young people continue to have the opportunity to be part of decision making structures and have launched ‘Get on Board Cymru’. The project aims to provide training and skills to young people and advice and support to organisations to ensure that the diversity of boards/committees is sustainable for the future.
